August 23 Meeting of Burundian Free Methodists

On August 23, 2008, Bishop David Roller will be hosting a meeting of Burundian Free Methodists who are living in the U.S. This meeting will be held at the Layhill FMC. As you may know, Catholic Social Services has been bringing people from the Central Africa Refugee camps to the United States. Among these people are a number of Free Methodists. Groups of these Burundi Christians have been settled in several cities in the East, including a large group in Roanoke, VA.

A Call to Prayer

Dear Free Methodist Family,

Situations arise in the life of the church in which we feel compelled to call the entire body of Free Methodists to particular prayer. Paul admonishes the saints in Ephesus to "pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints" (Ephesians 6:18 NIV). There is a pressing need for a great chorus of prayer from a people called Free Methodists.

At the end of August a delegation from the Free Methodist World Conference (Bishop Elie Buconyori - Burundi, Bishop David Kendall - North America, Bishop Keith Elford - Canada, and Superintendent Allan Ellershaw - United Kingdom) will be traveling to Rwanda to appeal for the release from prison of Rwandan Bishop Philemon Munyagisaka. We are calling on all Free Methodists everywhere to pray for the release of Bishop Philemon and for God's favor on the World Conference delegation.

Will you please join in fervent, concentrated prayer for this endeavor?

Karin Conner, on behalf of the Board of Bishops
Free Methodist Church of North America

Bishop David W. Kendall

Myrtle Beach Church Plant Celebrates First Anniversary

On July 19, 2008 Myrtle Beach Brazilian church plant celebrated their first anniversary. 127 people gathered for the service at which I was privileged to preach. God is blessing this church through the ministries of Pastor Arimateia and his wife Ismenia, and their son Josefa. The church is currently averaging in the mid-sixties and is able to pay Pastor Arimateia a full time salary and Pastor Josefa a part time salary. The church is growing steadily. They have had a number of baptisms, have recently started a 5:30 a.m. prayer service that is averaging in the 20's, and they have about 10 American adults attending who do not speak Portuguese. They use a wireless transmitter to translate the service into English. This church makes extensive use of small group discipleship.
